Japanese Scroll Collection - Ito Shinsui, Kanoko, Takehisa Yumeji, Seitei
For several years now I've been resisting the temptation to open yet another front in my Japanese art collecting 'addiction' -- but like any serious collector who has a weakness for 'bijin-ga' (Japanese for 'paintings of beautiful women') I can resist no longer. Because they are 'unique' (each scroll is hand painted and one-of-a-kind) Japanese scrolls are very collectable, and as such one would expect that they command a high price in comparison to their woodblock print counterparts (for which there are hundreds of copies for any one scene). Surprisingly this is not the case -- prices for bijin-ga scrolls, while being expensive, are generally no more expensive than limited-edition woodblock prints by the same artist. If a pre-war strike of an Ito Shinsui bijin-ga limited-edition woodblock print (for which at least one hundred copies were produced) sells for $2000 to $6,000 or more, why do Shinsui scrolls (each piece unique) not sell for several times this price? I guess this is one of the 'contradictions' we find when collecting art, and it is something I certainly intend to exploit until scroll prices increase to their true value.

Artists represented here include Ito Shinsui, Takehisa Yumeji, Kaburagi Kiyokata, Hirano Hakuho, Uemura Shoen, Kobayakawa Kiyoshi, Watabane Ikuharu, Yurimoto Keiko, and an unknown yet talented female(?) artist called 'Kanoko'. I have also listed other scroll genre (landscape, kacho-e) by various artists including Takahashi Shotei, Tsuchiya Koitsu, Ohara Shoson, Hosen, and Watanabe Seitei. I have also listed some silk paintings that were probably once mounted on scrolls.

Scrolls by Watanabe Seitei 60

Caution: Since 2012 there has been a large number of recently painted Seitei scrolls appearing on eBay (all sold by a single seller). They have faked light background soiling (to simulate aging, but miraculously no soiling on the painted areas), near-perfect silk surrounds, and despite being supposedly around 100 years old they have perfectly preserved colours, especially the greens, blues, and reds. Original Seitei scrolls will almost always show moderate to strong fading, background soiling, and other damage and degradation, especially to the silk surround. Some examples that I believe to be recently painted Seitei scrolls can be found here, here, here, here ( zoom), here ( zoom1, zoom2), here ( zoom1), here ( zoom1), here ( zoom1), here ( zoom1)
