Itsukushima Shrine at Miyajima - 夜の宮島
by Ito, Yuhan
|Title:||Itsukushima Shrine at Miyajima - 夜の宮島|
|Medium:||Woodblock - 木版画|
|Format:||Oban - 大判, 24.8 x 37.2cm (sheet size)|
|Condition:||Very good, just some light even age mellowing to the paper and faint spotting in the margins (easily removed by a conservator), which along with the style of the publisher's seal on the verso suggests an early printing (likely pre-war). Remnants of folder mounting adhesive on the verso edges.|
|Notes:||This is most likely the first edition, or at the very least a pre-war strike. It contains the very early Nishinomiya Yosaku publisher's seal that follows the style of that used by the Hasegawa publishing house (calligraphic-like text characters), Hasegawa being the predecessor of Nishinomiya. Later printings, if they carry a verso publisher seal, use standard block characters in the text (see my JAODB research database for an example of a later edition).
English title is taken from a publisher label. Yuhan's prints lack the black keyblock lines, thus imparting a watercolour-like appearance. An aura of romance and mystery exemplifies many of his work.
