I originally thought this was a rare trial proof example of this design which is the cover print on "The Female Image". However on closer inspection it would appear it was printed from a separate set of woodblocks (i.e. separate carving), although I need to confirm this by comparing the print to a strike from the edition published by Sakia & Kawaguchi. This design is slightly shorter in the vertical direction (see the comparison image). I assume this version was the first to be carved and printed, with the publisher deciding to go forward with a slightly larger format print.
The print is in pristine condition and the entire feeling of the print is softer using this lovely yellow gray background, rather than the dark blue.
